The United States DC Motor Market size is estimated at USD 110.20 million in 2024, and is expected to decline to USD 101.70 million by 2029.

United States DC Motor - Market

The need for energy-efficient DC motors has become more urgent because of growing industrialization in the United States. Energy-efficient DC motors can improve efficiency and lower energy loss, resulting in significant cost savings throughout their lifetime. Consequently, demand for energy-efficient motors is still coming from some sectors, such as industry, agriculture, construction, and transport, which is propelling the market.

Key Highlights

  • A favorable market environment for energy-efficient motors is fostered by increasing industrialization and efforts toward decarbonization. Given the rising number of industrial sectors adopting energy efficiency practices in the United States and increasing their commitment to decarbonization, continued market growth is expected. With this situation, companies active in the energy-efficient DC motor industry will have a significant opportunity to expand their activities while contributing to a more sustainable future in the country.
  • The IEA reports that electric motor-driven systems account for 53% of global electricity consumption. The IEC has played a pivotal role in defining energy-efficient electric motor systems. This effort is exemplified by the globally recognized test standard IEC 60034-2-1 for electric motors and the IEC 60034-30-1 classification, which delineates four levels of motor efficiency. Notably, the United States led the charge by becoming the first nation to establish MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) for motors.
  • In addition, in June 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) released a direct final rule in the Federal Register, focusing on energy conservation standards specifically for motors. The DOE, through this rule, introduced and revised standards for electric motors. Their evaluation concluded that these updated standards promise substantial energy conservation and are both technologically viable and economically sound. Furthermore, the government is actively involved in dissemination initiatives and providing education to raise awareness of the advantages of energy-efficient DC motors and how they can be seamlessly integrated into different industries.
  • However, the growth of the market for DC motors is slowing down due to higher installation costs. The initial price of DC motors is higher than that of conventional ones, which makes it difficult for some customers to choose specific DC motors. Different raw materials are used to produce these DC motors, including copper, steel, aluminum, and rare Earth magnets. The cost of those raw materials may fluctuate owing to dips in supply and demand, which can affect the total motor costs.
  • In addition, DC motors, due to their brushes and commutators, demand more frequent maintenance, elevating operational expenses. Conversely, alternative technologies, lauded for their reliability and reduced maintenance, are now the favored option in manufacturing. This shift has notably dampened the sales of DC motors in diverse industrial applications.

United States DC Motor Market Trends

The Permanent Magnet Type Segment is Expected to Hold a Significant Share

  • The permanent magnet DC motor is a newer type of motor, unlike induction motors. It uses the strength of electromagnetic principles so it can produce torque. This motor utilizes a permanent magnet to create the magnetic field of the DC motor. The magnets are uniformly magnetized and positioned on the circular steel stator's inner edges. A PMDC motor primarily consists of two parts: a stator and an armature.
  • PMDC motors, known for their compactness and weight efficiency compared to brushed motors, are ideal for applications in sectors with stringent space and weight limitations. This advantage is especially pronounced in discrete manufacturing, robotics, and aerospace industries, where the demand for compact, high-power-density motors is rising.
  • The rising demand for energy-efficient solutions stands out as the primary driver behind the increasing adoption of PMDC motors. This efficiency is especially crucial in applications requiring continuous or prolonged operation, like HVAC systems, pumps, and fans. Furthermore, the evolution of DC motors is propelled by advancements in materials and manufacturing. For instance, integrating rare Earth magnets has created compact yet potent DC motors. Simultaneously, refinements in manufacturing processes have bolstered their cost-effectiveness. Additionally, as per the US Geological Survey, the United States is a significant country in terms of rare Earth mine production, accounting for 43,000 metric tons of REO in 2023.
  • Further, significant innovations have emerged in control systems for such DC motors. Digital control systems offer enhanced precision and flexibility in managing motor speed and torque. These advancements have paved the way for intelligent motors capable of real-time adaptation to dynamic conditions.

The Oil and Gas Industry is Expected to Hold a Significant Market Share

  • DC motors have played a pivotal role in the drilling industry for decades. They facilitate various crucial operations, ranging from powering draw works and pumping fluids down the wellbore to handling cuttings upon return. In the industry's evolution, such motors have been instrumental in constructing jack-ups, allowing for the lowering of legs to the seafloor and elevating the platform above the waves. These motors are harnessed in deep-water rigs for tasks ranging from reeling in anchors to propelling thrusters on dynamically positioned semisubmersibles and drillships.
  • PMDC motors find current applications in the oil and gas processing industries and, notably, in propelling cruise vessels. The technology of permanent magnet machines offers a compelling alternative, particularly in scenarios where motors and compressors are fully integrated, operating within the same gas environment, ensuring a highly reliable and robust system design.
  • Further, self-excited DC motors are pivotal in the oil and gas industry, acting as dependable power sources for crucial equipment. In compressors, for example, they ensure steady pressure. These motors oversee the oil and gas flow for efficient transportation over long distances and drive the control valves, regulating pressure, temperature, and flow rates. Their ability to finely tune speeds and swiftly adapt to variations is instrumental in upholding safety and integrity.
  • The country's increasing oil and gas production is expected to drive market growth over the projected period. According to the US Geological Survey, in 2023, the US oil and gas extraction industry's production index reached an estimated 140, marking a significant rise from its 2017 level of 100.

United States DC Motor Industry Overview

The US DC motor market is fragmented, with the presence of several global and local players. The market is highly competitive. Big companies are adopting strategies like acquisitions, alliances, partnerships, investments, and technological launches to obtain an edge over competitors and retain their position in the global market. Developing an efficient product portfolio requires players to invest significantly in research and development.

  • November 2023: Portescap launched the 60ECF brushless DC-slotted flat motor, a new frame size in addition to its portfolio of Flat Motors, and significantly expanded its Brushless Flat Technology capabilities. To provide more effective heat management in its compact package, this 60 mm BLDC motor has a body length of 38.2 mm and an outer slotted rotor with an open casing design.
  • October 2023: Delta Line expanded its frameless BLDC motor product portfolio by introducing the family's smallest member, the 38BLF07, with only a 38 mm outer diameter. This model will supplement the existing range, which currently contains sizes 38, 50, 70, 85, and 115 mm. It has been made available with many options to meet different application needs. The company said it developed 38BLF07 to meet the space and performance requirements of portable power tools, precision medical devices, and space-constrained robotics, where high torque efficiency and compact size are of paramount importance.
