Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) Market Participants, Strategy, and Forecasts.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) offer energy density that will generate $24 trillion dollar markets by 2050 - non-carbon power-producing nuclear reactors that are modular. SMR systems currently in use in submarines, ice breakers, space, hospitals, ships, Russia, China, and data center power devices. The nuclear energy dense systems positioned to be used to replace existing coal plants worldwide will dominate the energy production scene foing forward.

Small modular reactors (SMRs) can be assembled in-factory, transported by ship or train, installed on site and connected to the electricity grid in a short time, significantly reducing the financial burden of the investment. SMR nuclear energy reactor equipment markets leverage compelling new technology to achieve savety for reactors and fuel.

TerraPower innovation technologies provide safe, affordable and abundant carbon-free energy. They use heat and electricity to drive economic growth while decarbonizing industry. They have processes for extracting radioisotopes for medical use. TerraPower nuclear reactor design and development provides a class of nuclear fast reactors termed traveling wave reactors.

Advanced reactors and other isotopic applications are possible with technology and enhanced computing capabilities that were unimaginable a few decades ago. TerraPower is innovating in nuclear to improve the lives of people everywhere and to build clean energy capability today.

Rolls-Royce to Create Nuclear Submarine Jobs

  • The U.K. government funds Rolls-Royce small modular nuclear reactor development. The company is positioning to build SMRs in England or Wales using a production line. Each jumbo SMRs costs Pound1.8bn ($2.4bn) and takes around four years to build. It has seen interest from America, the Czech Republic and Turkey.
  • Rolls-Royce SMR supports international efforts to de-carbonize energy systems. SMR has been designed in direct response to the global challenge. Rolls-Royce SMR addresses global markets with a world class product. The factory-built model is entirely scalable. As demand increases, Rolls-Royce intends to invest in more factories using the same design and management systems.
  • Australia, the UK and US (AUKUS) have allied to create a new fleet of nuclearpowered submarines. The submarines use Rolls-Royce reactors. Rolls-Royce submarines is creating 200 jobs, opening two new offices in Scotland and Wales. in Cardiff and Glasgow, moving into new offices for them. Rolls-Royce is aiming to attract engineers and specialists to work on its growing portfolio of defense nuclear projects.
  • The satellite offices, funded by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), will be based at Glasgow Airport Business Park and in St Mellons, Cardiff.
  • Rolls-Royce Submarines are creating 100 jobs in each city to help access the talent in each region. In Glasgow, the focus is on recruiting people with a pedigree in electrical controls and instrumentation and cyber security. In Cardiff people with a background in mechanical design, materials engineering, structural integrity analysis, thermal analysis and fluid dynamics.

TerraPower GE Hitachi Natrium Reactor Suppliers Chosen

  • Bill Gates TerraPower and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Natrium(TM) technology features a cost-competitive sodium fast reactor combined with a molten salt energy storage system. This provides clean, flexible energy, and energy stability. It integrates seamlessly into power grids. It supports high penetrations of renewable power.
  • TerraPower suppliers support its Natrium Reactor Demonstration Project in Kemmerer, Wyoming. These suppliers help with development of the Natrium plant. Upon completion, the Natrium plant will be a full commercial operating energy plant. It brings to market clean, reliable, stable baseload energy and flexible energy storage. TerraPower seeks to engage the diversity of the nuclear supply chain.

Recent suppliers added include:

  • GERB Vibration Control Systems Inc: design and testing services, and supply seismic isolation equipment for the Natrium reactor support structure.
  • Thermal Engineering International (USA) Inc.: design and fabricate the Sodium-Salt Heat Exchanger. The exchanger transfers heat from the sodium in the intermediate heat transport system, to the salt in the nuclear island salt heat transport system. providing for the essential flow and energy transfer of intermediate sodium and salt.
  • Hayward Tyler, Inc.: design, fabrication, testing and qualification for the Primary and Intermediate Sodium Pumps. The Primary Sodium Pumps provide forced cooling for the reactor core by driving sodium through the Primary Heat Transport (PHT) system. The Intermediate Sodium Pumps transport all anticipated heat loads from the PHT to the nuclear island salt heat transport system.
  • Framatome US Government Solutions LLC: design the Ex-Vessel Fuel Handling Machine and Bottom Loading Transfer Cask. Machines are an essential part of the fuel handling transport system that supports the nuclear reactor core component handling operations.
  • Teledyne Brown Engineering: design, fabrication, and testing Transfer Machine (IVTM). The IVTM is a digitally controlled, multi-style fuel handling machine. Its primary function is to manipulate core within the reactor vessel during refueling operations.

Terrestrial Energy

Terrestrial Energy and Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) have signed a MOU to collaborate and cooperate on IMSR Plant Development and Deployment. The agreement was made at the Net Zero Nuclear Summit, on the sidelines of COP 28. The agreement was signed by His Excellency (H.E.) Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Westinghouse Electric Company

The AP300 SMR, 300MWe (990MWth), is based on the licensed and operating AP1000 pressurized light water technology that has demonstrated industry leading reliability. The Westinghouse AP300 SMR delivers on the promises of small modular reactors: smaller scale, modular construction for efficient build schedules, state-of-theart safety and reliability.

X-Energy Partners and Projects

X-Energy has projects with Dow and Energy Northwest. X-Energy is building the cost-competitive Xe-100. It offers a carbon-free heat and power process. The company is building a Dow facility on the Gulf Coast. This is the first time an industrial manufacturer has announced its intention to deploy SMRs in its operations.
