Sodium sulphate or sulfate is an inorganic compound available in nature as thenardite. But generally the white-colored anhydrous compound or the crystalline decahydrate, commonly known as salt cake and Glauber's salt respectively, is used in various applications. It is represented with formula as Na2SO4. The crystalline form of sodium suphate is achieved when sodium ions found in igneous rocks are made to react with sulphur deposits by putting it in hot water, filtering it and then putting it in cold water. This compound is widely used for making soaps and detergents, paper, window glass, plate glass, water glass and bottles and also as laxative. At present, manufacturers use Solvay process for preparing sodium sulphate.
