Global Swaging Machine Market Definition

Swaging machines, known as swager, are a low-cost way to efficiently point, reduce and form rod, tube, and wire. Based on a simple principle, it is the process of shaping metal using a series of very rapid blows delivered by rotating hammers and forming dies around a piece of work. It is a highly economical method to point tubing, rod, wire for redraw, size, reduce, shape, taper, bond, and form metal parts that are hot or cold. Swaging is performed both hot and cold, although cold is popular because of its hardening effect on most of the materials. The process improves grain structure, giving the part greater strength and an unusually fine finish.

Swaging machines form a workpiece by forcing it in the die to reduce or increase the diameter of tubes and rods. Swaging is done by placing the tube rod inside a die or a process where the die is hammered together to reduce the diameter of the metal. Swaging machines do not result in the loss of material and material deformation. Since there is no material loss, swaging machines are used with precious metals. Swagers and swaging machines are commonly considered cold forming processes and are done as a hot forming process in some situations. Swaging machine processes are mainly divided into two categories, tube swaging and rotary swaging machines.

Tube swaging machines use a process which is similar to drawing wire. These swaging machines are expanded by placing a mandrel in the tube and applying radial, compressive forces on the outer diameter, which allows the inside shape to differ from the outer circular diameter. The swaging machine is used in applications such as assembling and end-forming. A fitting is set over a cable, then inserted into the swager and the cold formation force of the hammer actions gives a complete assembled piece. Some of them are Sailing rigging equipment, architectural cable railings, and recreational ropes course cables. A few of these are Aerospace tube components and fluid control tubes.

Global Swaging Machine Market Overview

The first category in the swaging machine involves extrusion of the workpiece, forcing it through a confining die to reduce its diameter, similar to the process of drawing wire. This may be similar to tube swaging. The second category consists of two or more dies used to hammer a round workpiece into a smaller diameter. This process is usually termed rotary swaging or radial forging. Tubes may be tagged and reduced in diameter to enable the tube to be initially fed through the die to then be pulled from the other side by using a rotary swager, which allows them to be drawn on a drawbench. Swaging is a simple method of choice for precious metals as there is no loss of material in the process.

Rotary swaging is a cold working process used in reducing the diameter, producing a taper, or adding a point to a round workpiece. It can impart internal shapes in hollow workpieces using a mandrel. Swaging a bearing into a housing means either flaring its grooves to the chamfer of the housing or flaring the housing's material over the edge of the bearing. The flaring process is done with a pair of rolls that moves around the hole and are fed down into the part, deforming the metal in a controlled, predicted way. Grease is usually used to lubricate this swaging process, which is called roller swaging. A swaging machine works by using two or four split dies which separate and close up to 2,000 times per minute. This action is done by mounting the dies into the machine's spindle which is further rotated by a motor.

The spindle is mounted inside a cage containing rollers that look like a roller bearing. The rollers are larger in size than the cage as the spindle spins the dies are pushed out to ride on the cage by centrifugal force, and the dies cross over the rollers they push the dies together due of their larger size. On a four-die machine, the number of rollers causes all dies to close at a time. If the number of rollers does not cause all pairs of dies to close at the same time then the machine is called a rotary forging machine, but it is still a swaging process. A variation of the rotary swager is the creeping spindle swaging machine in which both the spindle and cage revolve in opposite directions, this prevents the production of fins between the dies in which the material being swaged grows up in between the dies.
