North America Vegetable Seed - Market - IMG1

Hybrids dominate the market due to advancements in breeding technologies and growing consumer preference for quality produce

  • Hybrids were the fastest-growing segment in the North American vegetable seed market. They accounted for 92.8% of overall vegetables cultivated in the region in 2022. The usage of hybrids increased due to growing consumer preference for quality produce and changing dietary habits, which led to increasing demand for higher-quality crops, driving the adoption of hybrid seeds.
  • Cucumber and gherkin held the major share in the hybrid vegetable seed market, followed by cauliflower, broccoli, tomato, and pumpkin & squash. Hybrids are preferred more for these crops because of the improving characteristics of the resulting plants, such as better yield, greater uniformity, improved color, and disease resistance.
  • The United States held a large market in hybrid vegetables in North America, with a 70.7% share in 2022. This is because the country has a robust agricultural research and development infrastructure, enabling the creation of innovative hybrid seed varieties with improved traits and higher yields. The major states with increased usage of hybrids in the country are California, North Dakota, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, Washington, and Wisconsin.
  • The open-pollinated varieties and hybrid derivatives market in North America was valued at USD 124.8 million in 2022. Solanaceae held the largest share, 34.1%, in the open-pollinated varieties seed market value in 2022. This is because Solanaceae often exhibit natural variability in traits, making open-pollinated varieties suitable for maintaining a range of genetic traits.
  • The growing consumer preference for quality produce, advancements in breeding technologies, and growing demand for naturally variable traits are estimated to drive the overall seed market in the region.

The United States dominated the market due to higher area and higher usage of commercial hybrids.

  • North America is among the leading vegetable-producing regions in the world, and the seed market was valued at USD 1,750.4 million in 2022.
  • In 2022, the United States had the largest seed market in the region, with vegetables growing in an area of 1.6 million ha, which decreased by 11.0% compared to the acreage of 2017. The decrease in the area is because of the increase in commercial row crops area, and the farmers are able to meet the production demand with the use of high-yielding hybrid varieties.
  • The United States accounted for 69.1% of the North American vegetable seed market in 2022. Hybrids held the major share, accounting for 94.9% of the country's vegetable seed market in 2022. The high-yielding capacity of hybrids along with the pest resistance is driving the market for hybrids.
  • Mexico is the second-largest producer of vegetables in the region, followed by Canada, accounted for 5.3% and 2.1% of the global vegetable seed market in 2022, respectively. Solanaceae and roots and bulbs are the major crop families in terms of acreage occupied for cultivation. The two families alone accounted for 60.4% of the total vegetable cultivation area in the country in 2022. Moreover, growing demand for vegetables is projected to drive the market.
  • In North America, Canada is one of the major vegetable seed markets. In 2022, it accounted for 4.1% of the total seed market in the country. The major vegetables grown in the country are tomatoes, green peas, carrots, green beans, onions, cabbage, and broccoli. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, and lettuce share major acreage under protected cultivation in Canada.
  • The higher usage of hybrids, growing demand for vegetables, and high area under cultivation are the factors anticipated to drive the market.

North America Vegetable Seed Market Trends

Peas are the major vegetable crop cultivated in the region due to their high demand from food processing industries and daily consumption

  • The area under cultivation for vegetables in North America was low compared to row crops, accounting for 2.6% of the total area cultivated in 2022. In the region, the area under vegetable cultivation showed a decline of 9.8% in 2022 compared to 2016 due to a shift towards other crops, including soybean and cotton, adverse weather conditions, and pest pressure. Vegetables are more vulnerable to adverse weather, leading to a higher risk of failure. Also, there is a decrease in the overall arable land and an increase in soil erosion and salinity in the soil, making it unsuitable for vegetable crops.
  • The unclassified vegetable segment had the largest share of the area used for the cultivation of vegetables. The segment had a share of 55% in 2022, as the region is one of the major producers of peas. The largest crop in the region concerning the area occupied was peas, which accounted for 43.0% of the total area under vegetables in the region in 2022. This dominance was due to the significant usage of the crop in daily diets and food processing industries.
  • In 2022, the United States was the largest country in the region in terms of the area under vegetable production, which held 27.2% of the vegetable production area in North America. The area under the cultivation of vegetables was decreasing in the country due to growing urbanization in the rural areas and deteriorating farmlands due to the extensive use of chemicals. Mexico is the second-largest country in the region with respect to the area under vegetables, accounting for 'an 8.7% share in 2022. Vegetables are important crops in the country due to increased demand from domestic and neighboring countries such as the United States. The United States was the largest importer of vegetables from Mexico.

Increasing demand for fungal and viral disease-resistant Brassicaceae seeds in the region

  • Cucumber is one of the major cucurbit crops grown widely in the region. More than 97% of the seeds consumed in the region in 2022 were hybrid. Disease resistance, heat tolerance, cold resistance, wider adaptability to all seasons, early-matured varieties, suitability to the greenhouse and polyhouse cultivation, and other quality traits such as size, shape, and color of the fruit are the major traits cultivated in the country. Traits with resistance to viral diseases (cucumber mosaic and yellow mosaic virus) and fungal diseases have huge demand in the region, especially in protected conditions.
  • Cabbage is a major vegetable type in brassicas as it is widely cultivated, and high demand for high-value products is growing in domestic and international markets. Popular traits available in the region are disease resistance, head weight, foliage color, adaptability to wide seasons (as cabbage is cold-specific), early maturity, uniform maturity, and mid-, early, and late maturities. Resistance to foliar diseases, size of heads, and head weight are the major traits that have a high demand, as they help in increasing yield productivity per hectare. Therefore, these traits are expected to continue to gain popularity during the forecast period. For instance, major companies breeding the cucumber and cabbage traits are Enza Zaden, Bayer AG, Bejo Zaden BV, Syngenta, BASF SE, and Rijk Zwaan Zaadhandel BV.
  • High demand for resistance to foliar diseases, heat tolerance, and viral diseases are the factors expected to increase the demand for improved seed varieties produced by the major companies during the forecast period.
