Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) is a specialty plastic used in applications requiring the highest level of purity. PVDF is a high-reactive thermoplastic fluoropolymer obtained by vinylidene difluoride polymerization. It is typically a semi-crystalline polymer, which is approximately 50% amorphous. Compared to other fluoropolymers, PVDF provides low permeation values owing to high crystallinity and surface tension properties. This permeability is influenced by modifying crystalline parts and the crystalline degree. These materials are processed and fabricated into parts and coatings or processed from solutions such as spin coating, film casting, and solution casting.

PVDF, a specialty polymer with piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties, is used in the production of numerous products for various end-user industries, including electrical, electronic, construction, oil-and-gas, biomedical, and food industries. Moreover, owing to PVDF's high dielectric constant and dissipation factor, it is primarily used in wire and cable isolation.

PVDF is considered one of the most popular membrane materials. This has been used in various biomedical membrane applications and waste-water treatment. Thermal stability, chemical resistance, and processability are the most important properties fueling its application. Further, most commercial membranes are produced via the phase inversion method to reduce production costs.
