The animal feed market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.18%, reaching a market size of US$5,59,557.494 million in 2030 from US$4,78,881.362 million in 2025.
Animal feed refers to the food given to the domestic animals, especially the agricultural animals. There are two basic types of feed: fodders and forages. Fodders are food given to domestic animals, which includes straws, and pelleted feeds. Whereas forage feed is the edible parts of plants, like herbage, browse, and mast. These can be harvested for feeding and provided as feed for the grazing animals.
Further, several countries have observed a growing demand for animal feed in the global market and are trying to attain the maximum share in the sector. For instance, according to the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) of India, the volume of prepared animal feed exported by the nation in 2022-2023 was about 796,462.12 MT, amounting to about US$ 445.60 million. India exported products like compounded animal feed, barn sharps, residues of legume plants, wheat, & cereals, maize barns, and concentrated compound feed. The major importers of India's animal feed products were mostly countries in Asia Pacific regions, like Bangladesh, Nepal, Vietnam, Hong Kong, also France.
Moreover, the USA is also trying to attract a much higher share of the global animal feed market. As per the American Feed Industry Association of the USA, the nation's total animal food export was valued at US$ 13.4 billion, with a total of 19.8 million MT of animal food exported globally in 2023. This data for 2023 shows a massive increase from 2022 when the nation's total animal food export was about US$ 7.5 billion with about 9 million MT in volume. Canada, China, Mexico, and Japan are among the major export destinations of animal food in the USA.
Animal feed Market Drivers
The animal feed industry is expected to rise in the coming years due to the increase in meat consumption worldwide. According to OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2021-2030, global meat production per capita is projected to increase by 0.3% P.A. to 35.4kg by 2030.
Moreover, the bulk of meat production growth is predicted to be in developing regions, which would account for 80% of the additional output. It moreover stated that beef consumption is anticipated to grow to 76 Mt over the next ten years and will constitute around 16% of the total rise in meat consumption as compared to the base period.
Further, global pig meat consumption is projected to grow to 127 Mt over the next ten years and will account for 28% of the overall increase in meat consumption as per the OECD Agricultural Outlook for 2020 to 2029. This rise will result in an increase in meat consumption followed by a growth in population is projected to fuel the animal feed market.
Animal Feed Market Geographical Outlook
The North American market for animal feed is expected to hold a dominant market during the projected period. The increase of diseases amongst the animals coupled with the growing awareness about the nutritional content are among the primary contributors driving the demand in the region.
The United States is the key market in the region as the US animal food manufacturing industry strongly relies on the free-trade agreement with Canada and Mexico (North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)), which has green-signalled the exports of feed and feed ingredients. This trade agreement, coupled with the growing livestock industry, is fuelling the animal feed industry.
Moreover, according to the American Feed Industry Association, there are more than 5800 animal food facilities in the country whose production results in more than 284 million tonnes of finished animal feed on an annual basis. Further, the major ingredients used in feed production in the United States include corn (145 million tonnes), soybean meal (35 million tonnes), wheat products (8 million tonnes), and DDGs (32 million tonnes), among others.
