Report Overview

The ASEAN digital X-ray market reached US$ 5.6 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach US$ 9.0 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.3% during the forecast period 2024-2031.

A digital X-ray, or digital radiography, is a modern type of X-ray that utilizes digital sensors instead of photographic film, as with a traditional X-ray. The image captured is converted to digital data immediately and is available for review within seconds. The digital X-ray procedure is highly similar to traditional X-rays; it is the technology that is very different. Bursts of radiation still pass through the body and form an image based on how much radiation passes through the different organs, but rather than using photographic film to capture the image, digital sensors are used.

Compared to other imaging devices, flat panel detectors, also known as digital detector arrays (DDAs) provide high-quality digital images. They can have a better signal-to-noise ratio and improved dynamic range, which, in turn, provides high sensitivity for radiographic applications. Flat panel detectors work on two different approaches, namely, indirect conversion and direct conversion. Indirect conversion flat panel detectors have a scintillator layer that converts x-ray photons to photons of visible light and utilizes a photodiode matrix of amorphous silicon to subsequently convert the light photons into an electrical charge.

Market Dynamics: Drivers

Increasing Prevalence of Chronic Diseases

The rising prevalence of chronic diseases propels the market growth. The increase in the number of chronic diseases increases the need for medical imaging technologies. Through various X-ray techniques, various chronic diseases can be diagnosed, and further medication or treatment is decided depending on the scanning results.

For instance, according to an article published by ICMR, in 2022, the projected number of new cancer cases in India was 1,461,427, with a crude incidence rate of 100.4 per 100,000 individuals. Approximately one in nine people in India is expected to face a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. Notably, lung cancer ranked highest among males, while breast cancer held the top spot for females. Within childhood cancers (0-14 years), lymphoid leukemia emerged as the predominant site, accounting for 29.2% in boys and 24.2% in girls. Looking ahead, an estimated 12.8% increase in cancer incidence by 2025 is expected as compared to 2020.

Moreover, according to an article published by the National Institute of Health in September 2023, in Japan, cancer has been the leading cause of death since 1981, accounting for one-third of total deaths in this developed country with a high life expectancy. According to the National Cancer Center of Japan, there were estimations of 1,019,000 new cancer cases and 380,400 cancer deaths in 2022. The most common cancers in Japan include colorectal, stomach, lung, prostate, and female breast cancers, which account for approximately 60% of all cancer cases in the country.

Restraints

Factors such as high cost associated with the treatment, lack of healthcare infrastructure, and shortage of skilled professionals are expected to hamper the market.

Market Segment Analysis

The ASEAN digital X-ray market is segmented based on product, portability, application, scanning technology, and end-user

The segment direct radiography accounted for approximately 65.3% of the ASEAN digital X-ray market share

The direct radiography segment is expected to hold the largest market share over the forecast period. In this segment, the technological developments, and the increasing demand would drive this market.

Direct digital radiography is a type of digital radiography in which the digital registration of the image takes place directly at the detector with no intermediate processing step such as cassette readout in computed radiography (CR). Direct systems convert X-rays into an electric charge by means of a photoconductor such as amorphous selenium. In indirect systems, X-rays are converted into visible light by means of an intermediate scintillator layer such as cesium iodide. The light photons are then converted to an electric charge by a photodiode.

For instance, in July 2022, Fujifilm Healthcare, a leading provider of diagnostic and enterprise imaging solutions, announced the launch of the FDR Cross, an innovative hybrid c-arm and portable x-ray solution built for hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASC). The dual-function c-arm is the first of its kind to offer portable fluoroscopic and radiographic imaging on a single platform, reducing the need to bring in additional imaging equipment for essential image-guided procedures.

Key Developments

In February 2024, RIMS Manipur launched an advanced three-dimensional X-ray system. It is a "Multipurpose Digital Radiography Fluoroscopy System (DRF-800)". The newly installed machine will broadly assist in radiological-related investigations and this would provide three-dimensional X-rays on different parts of the human body while predicting any medical issue in the liver, pancreas, and fertility tests in gynecology.

In November 2023, Carestream Health launched its new affordable Horizon X-ray System that offers high-quality imaging to help improve clinical outcomes and user-friendly features to help improve productivity. The budget-friendly system is designed especially for small-to-midsize imaging centers, orthopedic facilities, urgent care centers, and hospitals.
