Report Overview

U.S. Prenatal Supplements Market reached US$ 187.7 million in 2023 and is expected to reach US$ 325.5 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 5.7% during the forecast period 2024-2031

Prenatal supplements are multivitamins designed to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant women and those trying to conceive. They provide essential vitamins and minerals like folic acid, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for the fetus's development and the mother's well-being. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects in the baby, while iron supports increased blood volume during pregnancy. Prenatal supplements are convenient for providing adequate nutrients for both mother and baby, especially when dietary intake is insufficient or difficult to obtain through food alone.

Market Dynamics: Drivers & Restraints

Rise in the prevalence of chronic diseases

The U.S. parenteral supplements market is driven by the rise in chronic diseases like Crohn's, celiac, and short bowel syndrome, which require direct nutrient delivery into the bloodstream. The growing elderly population, who are more susceptible to malnutrition and require specialized nutritional support, also contributes to the demand for these supplements.

For instance, according to NCBI, Celiac disease (CD) is one of the most common diseases, resulting from both environmental (gluten) and genetic factors [human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and non-HLA genes]. The prevalence of CD has been estimated to approximate 0.5%-1% in different parts of the world. However, the population with diabetes, autoimmune disorder, or relatives of CD individuals have an even higher risk for the development of CD, at least in part, because of shared HLA typing.

Complications associated with the supplements

The U.S. parenteral supplements market faces challenges due to high costs, specialized equipment, and trained healthcare professionals. These supplements require careful handling to prevent complications like infections and nutrient imbalances. The complexity and costs limit accessibility, particularly in countries with less advanced healthcare infrastructure or for patients without adequate insurance coverage.

Market Segment Analysis

The U.S. prenatal supplements market is segmented based on product type, form, and distribution channel.

The iron from the product type segment accounted for approximately 41.3% of the U.S. prenatal supplements market share

The iron from the product type segment accounted for approximately 41.3%. Iron is crucial in prenatal supplements as it is essential for both the mother's health and the developing fetus. During pregnancy, a woman's blood volume increases, requiring iron to supply oxygen and nutrients. Iron is a key component of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Adequate iron intake prevents iron deficiency anemia, which can cause fatigue, weakness, and increased risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight. Iron is also vital for the baby's development, particularly brain development and healthy red blood cell formation. Prenatal supplements typically include iron to support these needs.

For instance, in June 2023, the FDA approved ferric carboxymaltose injection (Injectafer; Daiichi Sankyo Inc. and American Regent Inc.) for the treatment of iron deficiency in adult patients with heart failure categorized as New York Heart Association (NYHA) class 2/3 to improve exercise capacity.

The NYHA Functional Classification evaluates patients' heart failure based on the severity of their symptoms. Patients who have a slight or marked limitation of physical activity due to fatigue, palpitation, or dyspnea are considered to have class 2 or class 3 heart failure, respectively. The new indication marks the first and only FDA approval for an intravenous (IV) iron replacement therapy for this indication.
