Photovoltaic cells refer to semiconductor material components that can convert sunlight into electrical energy. It is one of the key core components of solar photovoltaic power generation systems. It mainly converts sunlight into electrical energy through different types of silicon materials (such as monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon) or other new materials (such as perovskite). Photovoltaic cells can be divided into three categories: polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, and thin-film photovoltaic cells. With the continuous advancement of technology, the efficiency of photovoltaic cells has gradually increased and the cost has continued to decrease. Photovoltaic power generation plays an increasingly important role in the global energy structure.
China, India, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea are the major producers of photovoltaic cells in the world. According to CRI analysis, these countries are not only producers of photovoltaic cells, but also important nodes in the global supply chain. North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region are important consumer markets for photovoltaic cells in the world. Among them, as the governments of Southeast Asian countries attach importance to renewable energy policies, the photovoltaic markets in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries are developing rapidly, and their demand for photovoltaic cells is gradually increasing.
With the rapid development of Vietnam's photovoltaic industry, the scale of Vietnam's photovoltaic cell market continues to grow. In the past few years, the Vietnamese government has implemented several policies to encourage the development of photovoltaics, especially photovoltaic power generation projects for homes and commercial buildings, which has provided strong support for the political demand for photovoltaic cell market in Vietnam. According to CRI analysis, by 2023, Vietnam's photovoltaic power generation installed capacity will exceed 18GW, exceeding the total of other Southeast Asian countries, making Vietnam one of the leading countries in photovoltaic development in Southeast Asia.
According to CRI analysis, Vietnam's photovoltaic cell manufacturing industry is developing rapidly, mainly dominated by foreign-funded enterprises. At present, due to the limited production capacity of photovoltaic cells in Vietnam, a large number of imported photovoltaic cells and related components are still needed, especially photovoltaic cells from China, Malaysia and other places.
According to CRI data, the total value of Vietnam's photovoltaic cell imports in 2023 will reach US$2.76 billion. The market demand will be even stronger in 2024. From January to October, the cumulative value of Vietnam's photovoltaic cell imports will be close to US$2.373 billion.
According to CRI analysis, the main import sources of Vietnamese photovoltaic cells include Thailand, China, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong, China. From 2021 to 2024, the main import sources of Vietnamese photovoltaic cells are Hong Kong, China, Thailand and Malaysia. The main companies exporting photovoltaic cells to Vietnam include ET SOLAR POWER HONGKONG LIMITED, RUNERGY INTERNATIONAL PV TECHNOLOGY PTE LTD, LONGI SOLAR TECHNOLOGY HK LTD etc.
Overall, Vietnam's photovoltaic cell market is expanding with the rapid development of Vietnam's local photovoltaic industry. According to CRI analysis, in the long run, Vietnam's photovoltaic cell production capacity and output have great room for growth. However, in the next five years, Vietnam's photovoltaic cell imports will continue to grow. CRI recommends that companies related to the global photovoltaic industry chain should investigate the Vietnamese photovoltaic market as soon as possible to prepare for entering the Vietnamese market in the future.
