A dry-type transformer is a type of transformer that uses air or other solid insulating materials (such as epoxy resin) for insulation and cooling, rather than oil or other liquid media. This type of transformer is widely used in places requiring high safety, minimal maintenance, and specific environmental standards, such as subways, hospitals, schools, industrial parks, and high-rise buildings.
The main function of transformers is to convert one voltage level to another, while providing safe and efficient power transmission across electrical systems. Besides the power transmission and distribution transformers commonly used, there are also transformers designed for voltage and current measurement or protection, including instrument voltage transformers and current transformers.
Compared with liquid-filled transformers, dry-type transformers are generally safer and more environmentally friendly, have a longer lifespan, and are suitable for indoor or confined spaces.
Upstream sectors supply essential materials like insulation (e.g., epoxy resin, silicon steel), conductors (e.g., copper, aluminum), core structure materials, and electronic components (e.g., temperature monitoring devices, cooling fans). The midstream phase includes the design, manufacturing, and assembly of the dry-type transformers. Downstream sectors cover the power industry, construction, transportation, and various manufacturing industries.
The global dry-type transformer market has strong growth potential, driven primarily by urbanization, grid modernization, renewable energy development, and increased power demand. According to CRI, major global producers and exporters of dry-type transformers include Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, Eaton, and TBEA.
Vietnam's dry-type transformer demand mainly comes from urbanization, power infrastructure expansion, and industrialization. According to CRI, in recent years, the Vietnamese government has launched multiple power plant projects to enhance the domestic power grid, promoting the growth of the dry-type transformer market. Based on the approved 2023 Eighth Power Development Plan, Vietnam plans to double the current installed capacity of its power sector by 2030.
Due to limited domestic transformer manufacturing capabilities, Vietnam can only produce some basic low-voltage or medium-voltage dry-type transformers. However, its capacity and technology for producing medium- and high-end dry-type transformers remain limited. Consequently, Vietnam's dry-type transformer market is heavily reliant on imported products.
According to CRI data, in 2023, Vietnam imported dry-type transformers worth approximately USD 300 million. From January to July 2024, Vietnam's dry-type transformer imports totaled nearly USD 200 million, marking about a 13% increase over the same period in 2023.
CRI analyzes that Vietnam's major import sources for dry-type transformers from 2021 to 2024 include China, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Key suppliers to the Vietnamese market include Cloud Network Technology Singapore PTE. LTD, Transon CO., LTD., and Dongguan Sunstrong Electric Machine LTD. Vietnam's main importers in the dry-type transformer industry are companies associated with power generation, manufacturing, distribution, and other industrial sectors. Many are foreign enterprises. According to analysis, primary companies in this market in Vietnam include Fuyu Precision Component CO., LTD, Solum Vina CO., LTD, and Dongyang E&P Vina CO., LTD.
Overall, with Vietnam's economic development, rising income levels, and accelerated industrialization and urbanization, CRI expects continued growth in Vietnam's dry-type transformer market. Due to limited domestic production capacity, the country's demand for imported dry-type transformers is likely to continue growing in the coming years.
