Hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves transplantation of hair follicles to the balding scalp. There are two main types of hair transplant systems used - Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE).
In FUT surgery, a strip of skin containing hair follicles is surgically removed from the back of scalp where hair growth is permanent. The strip is then dissected under a microscope into follicular units, which contain 1 to 4 hairs each. Follicular units are then implanted into tiny incisions created by a punch tool in the balding areas of the scalp. FUT allows transplantation of a large number of follicular units in a single session, making it faster. However, it leaves a linear scar on the back of the scalp.
FUE involves extraction of hair follicles one by one directly from the donor areas using a punch tool with a diameter of 0.6 to 0.9 mm. The follicles are patiently extracted along with a small amount of surrounding tissue and immediately transplanted to create micro-slots in the balding recipient areas. FUE does not leave any strip scar. However, the process is slow and expensive since it is done follicle by follicle. It also has higher chances of graft damage during extraction and implantation making the success rate slightly lower than FUT. Both FUT and FUE can effectively restore hair and have their own set of advantages and limitations depending on the balding level and graft requirement.
Market Dynamics:
Increasing prevalence of alopecia globally will aid in the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, according to the data published by the National Alopecia Areata Foundation in 2024, about 2% of people across the world will experience alopecia areata at some point in their lifetime.
