Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising bio-based building block chemical derived from biomass. It is gaining significance due to its potential to serve as a biomass-derived substitute for petroleum-based terephthalic acid, which is widely used in the production of polyesters and polyethylene furanoate (PEF). FDCA can be polymerized into bio-based polyester and are used to produce fibers, resins, and packaging materials. Global furandicarboxylic acid market is driven by growing emphasis on replacing fossil fuel-based chemicals with sustainable bio-based alternatives to reduce dependence on petroleum and address climate change concerns.
Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is an organic chemical compound consisting of two carboxylic acid groups that are attached to a central furan ring. It can be produced from certain carbohydrates and is considered a renewable resource. FDCA is a significant molecule for the formation of various products, including surfactants, epoxy resins, and the next-generation polymer PEF (polyethylene furanoate). It has a very high melting point (it melts at 342 °C) and undergoes reactions typical for carboxylic acids, such as halogen substitution, di-ester formation, and the formation of amides. The molecular formula of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid is C6H4O5, and its molecular weight is 156.09 g/mol. It is partly soluble in water, with a water solubility of 0.899 g/L at 20 °C (68 °F).
Food & beverage is the leading end use industry segment for the furandicarboxylic acid market due to the increasing use of FDCA-based polyesters in producing bio-based bottles, food packaging films and containers. Positive steps by governments worldwide to promote bio-economy and adopt strict environmental regulations regarding use of plastics are creating new growth opportunities. However, high costs that are associated with FDCA production through biomass refining methods restrict wider market adoption. But ongoing research and development (R&D) towards developing optimized catalytic and fermentation processes can help lower production costs in future.
