Global Breast Pumps Market Share (%), By Product Type, 2023
A breast pump is a mechanical device used for drawing milk from the breast. It allows the consumer to pump the breast milk into bags or storage bottles for later use. Breast pumps are used primarily to relieve breast pain and provide breast milk for babies who are unable to suckle milk by themselves. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a breast pump is usually held by hand or by a nursing bra, a breast pumping bra, or a band. Breast pumps extract milk from the breasts by creating a seal around the nipple and applying and releasing suction to the nipple, which expresses milk from the breast. Each suction and release combination is called a cycle. Breast milk provides protection against many illnesses for infants, as it is the main source of their nutrition. Breast milk also transfers antibodies or immunoglobulins like IgA, IgM, IgG, and others from the mother to their infant. Breast pumps also serve as a great help for breastfeeding working mothers by providing some flexibility with their feedings.
Market Dynamics
The increasing organic growth strategies, such as product launches by key market players to expand their product portfolio, are expected to drive market growth over the forecast period. For instance, in August 2020, Medela, a company that provides breast pumps to mothers and working professionals, announced the launch of a new pump-in-style dual electric breast pump with Maxflow technology for personal use in the United States and Canada. Delivering hospital-grade performance, a closed system, and an intuitive control panel, the pump-in style combines the proven performance a mother expects from her Medela with unparalleled new technology and modern design.
