The global Small Arms and Light weapons market is estimated at USD 37.12 billion in 2024, projected to grow to USD 48.74 billion by 2034 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.76% over the forecast period 2024-2034.
Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) are a broad category of portable firearms, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, and machine guns. Their simplicity, affordability, and ease of concealment make them highly accessible and widely used, both legally and illegally. While essential for self-defense and law enforcement, SALW have also been instrumental in armed conflicts, terrorism, and organized crime. The global proliferation of SALW poses a significant threat to security, human rights, and development. Their impact is particularly devastating in regions affected by conflict, where they fuel violence, hinder peace building, and impede humanitarian efforts.
While often perceived as relatively low-tech weapons, small arms and light weapons (SALW) have also benefited from technological advancements. One key development is in materials: the use of advanced materials such as polymers and composites has led to lighter, more durable, and corrosion-resistant firearms. Improved ammunition design, including enhanced stopping power and reduced recoil, has further increased the effectiveness of SALW. Innovations in firearms design, focusing on ergonomics, modularity, and accuracy, have significantly improved the usability and performance of small arms. Advancements in suppressor technology have reduced the acoustic signature of firearms, making them quieter and more discreet. Additionally, technologies such as ballistic vests and helmet systems have been developed as counter-measures to mitigate the effects of small arms fire, enhancing protection for individuals in combat situations. However, it's important to note that while technology has improved the capabilities of SALW, it has also contributed to their proliferation and misuse.
Several factors contribute to the global prevalence of small arms and light weapons (SALW). One significant factor is conflict and instability. Areas affected by armed conflict often experience weak governance, porous borders, and a breakdown of law and order, all of which facilitate the proliferation of SALW. Organized crime also plays a crucial role in the illicit trade of these weapons, with criminal networks often linked to drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other illegal activities. Terrorism is another factor, as terrorist groups rely on SALW for carrying out attacks and intimidating populations. Weak gun control laws further contribute to the spread of SALW, as lax regulations on the sale and ownership of firearms make it easier for these weapons to be acquired and misused. Lastly, illegal manufacturing of firearms, often taking place in clandestine workshops, undermines efforts to control the distribution and use of SALW, exacerbating the problem.
The impact of small arms and light weapons (SALW) varies significantly across different regions. In Africa, the continent is heavily affected by SALW, with many countries experiencing armed conflicts and high levels of gun violence. The Middle East has a complex security landscape, with SALW playing a crucial role in conflicts and terrorism. In Latin America, drug-related violence and organized crime have driven the proliferation of SALW in many countries.
While Europe is generally more regulated than other regions, it is not immune to the problem of SALW, facing issues related to illegal trafficking and terrorism. Asia presents a mixed picture, with some countries facing significant challenges related to SALW, while others have implemented effective control measures. Addressing the global challenge of SALW requires a multifaceted approach, including disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration programs, improved border control, international cooperation, and community-based violence prevention initiatives.

The Federal Government has inked a multi-million dollar arrangement with the Queensland business NIOA to begin acquiring and supplying the Australian Defence Force with the next generation of small guns (ADF). The contract is part of a $500 million promise to supply greater lethality weapon systems to Australia's soldiers, sailors, and aviators. The ADF will receive new sniper rifles, handguns, shotguns, personal defence weapons, fighting knives, and an assault breaching system from NIOA through a variety of subcontractors. NIOA will be the prime contractor under the contract, working with local and international suppliers and weapon manufacturers on the purchase, integration, delivery, and ongoing support.
The Brazilian Army has received an initial shipment of 50 new 7.62mm IA2 assault rifles. These weapons were purchased by the Brazilian Army under the 'Obtaining Full Operational Capacity' strategic programme, which was manufactured by state-owned Imbel. The Army Assessment Centre will receive the first batch of 7.62mm IA2s for technical and operational tests. The factory will begin production of a new batch of 1,450 7.62mm rifles after gaining approval. The IA2s were purchased under a Decentralised Performance Term (Termo de Execuco Descentralizada - TED) contract, which is utilised by Brazilian government organisations and enterprises, as well as state-owned businesses, to carry out joint programmes.
